The Tables have Turned(Late)

"As the primaries approached, Arthur had studied the commercials of other canidates very carefully. His decison was to try and find a different angle" (David, 188).

This quote is from a scene that stuck out to me a lot from this reading. I found it cool how we are so used to Arthur being the top guy(king) and being in charge that I liked this perspective as Arthur is no longer in that position. In the story we see him running to be the next Mayor and this quote shows he is working to be the top guy in charge, against competitors who are equal to him.

  1. I agree with you on this, as it stuck out to me for the same reason. Always seeing him as a superior being can be a drag at times, so this story in which he is up against equals creates a good change of pace in the reading. Great thinking here Matthew.

  2. Seeing Arthur having to go against other people who were basically equals to him was strange since the man is practically deified among the masses. But I guess putting him in that position not only stresses the humility aspect of Arthur's character, but just makes him even more worthy of being in a leadership position.

  3. It was strange but also in a way i think it is a way of justifying his ability and renown to modern audiences: we are less inclined to accept the 'natural gifts' or royalties bestowed upon people, like Arthur receiving the crown. When we see him compete against others, if he wins, we feel like he deserved to win.

  4. I agree that it was strange seeing Arthur going against people who are just as powerful or even more powerful. Since this whole time the Author has made it seem like Arthur is a character that is untouchable or even god like.

    1. I saw that as well. I was surprised he was chill about it but finding out that he was King Arthur surprised me because I'm sure it took him a lot of time to realize that he isn't viewed the same way as he was back in his old time.

  5. Like you, I really enjoyed this version of Arthur. Instead of relying on the kingdom he runs and his knights, he only has his wits and friends to win the race. That is, until his true identity was spilled by his opponent. But I did enjoy this short story.

  6. I agree with you as well and it was interesting to see how he kind of had to fight to have power instead of it being given to him. I could see vulnerability and confidence in Arthur.
