I really dig this book a lot overall. I especially enjoy the fact that they do not just retell the story of King Arthur, they enhance it by putting him in a whole new context and scenario. I think that everything molded together and fit quite nicely. While it was kind of weird that the book decided to withhold certain names that are tied with each character, it did keep me heavily invested. However, I did find it rather infuriating that they decided to reveal that Mr. Morton was connected to Merlin at the end of the book (286). Not that it made the story bad, its just a personal gripe. I feel childish in saying that it was the one thing to keep me invested, but aspects such as this really help to read any kind of fantasy novel in my opinion. It might even be my favorite aspect of the book since I have the attention span of a toddler and I need weird things like this to keep me invested.
I agree and understand. The story was great, I liked how they modernized the story to fit into these new characters' lives. I liked that they withheld some names, I thought it made it mysterious.
ReplyDeleteI honestly did not think they were going to reveal Mr. Morton as Merlin AT ALL. For me I saw it clear as day from the beginning after that scene at the football game (when Ellie talks to him about her proposal), and I just thought that Cabot was going to just leave it as a little Easter egg for other Arthurian connoisseurs.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I can agree with you, it didn't come to me as much of a surprise. This is really because the author wasn't exactly trying to hide Lance's identity or future alter as Lancelot. I'm really not that sure why some names were better hidden than others in the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree; Cabot did a great job at enhancing of aspects of the original texts to be more appetizing for modern audiences
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this book as well because they were able to take a old book and relate it to the newer readers. Whereas some books that we read that were written 100 years ago are hard to read because they use words that are not typically used anymore. So I enjoyed the twist that the author put on this book.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely intrigued me how the names of the characters in Cabot's story were connected to Arthurian tales. I was not as shocked to find out Mr. Morton was connected to Merlin. However, I was super shocked how Ellie was not actually the Lady of Shalott, but the Lady of the Lake. It did makes sense overall once Mr. Morton pointed out how if she were the Lady of Shalott that she would not have helped Will and they would never be a couple. Overall, I felt it was a good twist at the end for Ellie to find out who she really was.
ReplyDeleteYes, this story was different than the past King Arthur stories and that made it fresh. However, I wished the author put the characters in a different setting than the old high school setting we all know about and have seen before, including the stereotypes and cliches.
