Keeping Up With The Pendragons
I am a sucker for reality TV. So, my idea is that I do a spin off of the Kardashians franchise and make it, well....Arthurian. It would be focused around the Pendragons (Igerna, Uther, Arthur, Morgan, Mordred, Guinevere, etc.) and it would follow them in their day-to-day life as a rich family in the modern world. Special appearances would be made by friends Lancelot, Gawain, Elaine, and the family's manager Merlin. I could probably change some of these names to make it more 21st-century (as Meg Cabot did in Avalon High). I would do something with the Round Table as the dinner table. There is plenty of drama that happens in the tales we have read about King Arthur to make it perfect for reality TV. I'm having some trouble developing a little bit of this but I really want to stick with this idea because I think it's funny. I'm open to any and literally all suggestions!! (Despite what the gif below says 🙂)

Hi Eleana! I love your idea and that it goes with reality tv because that is how I saw this playing out too! My question/suggestion for you is what would you do with the quests? Would Lancelot and Arthur be movie stars and their movies are the quests that they would go on? Or is your project just trying to understand the characters on a deeper level? I think that either way would work well just thought that would add a little pizzaz to the show!
ReplyDeleteAs I've commented on others' posts, since I'm not into reality TV (sorry, just not my thing!), I don't have a ton of advice on how to make your idea work within the format. But of course I do want to encourage you to think about how your format allows for the values and virtues of Camelot to play out - who is the good guy and bad guy here (I assume this is "faux reality" - trying to make this look like reality TV but actually scripted out)? who do we cheer for any why? Who's there just to muck it up and what is their motivation?
ReplyDeleteI think Grace's question is a good one: think about your plot a bit and how that will give some shape to your narrative. What "quests" do the knights have in this show? How do the dramas of courtly love play out in a modern context? Thinking through some of these ideas will help you get rolling.
I look forward to seeing your project, Eleana!
Maybe some episodes could be them getting into modernized versions of predicaments like Saga of the Mantel or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. They have to work together to solve these issues and actually be a family instead of letting the drama take over. Or, maybe the drama just invades and makes the situations worse!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Esther's idea. I think it would be cool to see them work together and not let the family drama get in the way!
DeleteI like this idea. I think that them doing quests would be fun to see. SInce the characters are going to be modernized are they going to have jobs? Maybe by having them have careers that contribute to the family fortune you can highlight each character's characteristics and implement quests that way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what ester said I think that it would make for a really interesting idea to have them have to work together.
ReplyDeleteYou are right in the fact that people are suckers for good reality TV, so this is a great idea! I can only imagine some of the scenes being shone, especially the cheating one!
