Intensive therapy for the gang

So, hear me out, a huge problem that most of our class had when we were reading the original texts was the lack of character development. there was certainly love, and war, and action, and plot after plot after plot, but at the end of the day, I wasn't that invested because I didn't feel close to the characters. So, I think something that would be really different from the original texts, but still enhance them, would be some sort of intensive therapy session with each character. Basically, i would analyze them and diagnose (well, the internet would) them with different mental disorders if the evidence suggests that they may have any. of course, I would twist a couple of the original stories to fit the evaluations, but I think this would be a cool and fun way to see deeper into the hearts of the characters. I would basically be retelling their stories but through a totally new lense that would make their character's deeper and more complex to the reader. I think I would want to do it with the characters Guinevere, Arthur, Lancelot, Modred, Merlin, and maybe one other character (who should it be?). The only thing i'm not sure about is what platform it should be. I'm thinking of maybe a video blog series? Where each video is one session with the characters? or maybe their sessions are split into two videos so it can be more episodes? This is where I need more advice, so please help me and tell me what you think about this!

  1. The diagnosis aspect sounds pretty cool. It reminds me of how people assign personality types to characters, like MBTI or Enneagram. I think it could work as a video series, maybe a YouTube channel? You could create a character for yourself who is the interviewer/counselor and each of the Arthurian characters would be the clients. Depending on the complexity of the character, that could determine the number of videos needed. For instance, Arthur would get more episodes because we have more information about him, but maybe only 1-2 episodes for the Lady of Shallot. Do you think you would also include therapy or recovery ideas to the characters? Like if you diagnose someone as depressed, would you give that character advice at the end?

  2. Maybe the other character could be Morgan. In some of the modern versions of Arthur we have seen, she is presented as generally angry, so maybe she could have bipolar disorder or anger issues or something like that! The platform could be something like a "limited series" on Netflix (since those are super popular nowdays) or something like Explained, where each episode is a different character, and includes multiple people giving their insight on the diagnosis (like a documentary would)? Neat idea!

  3. This could be interesting - either as a YouTube channel, as you and Esther have mentioned, or as a TV show like Lie to Me (have you seen this? I think you would like it!) where you have a character like Tim Roth whose job is to recognize people's emotions and what emotions they may even be hiding from themselves.

I look forward to seeing your project, Abbey!

  4. I like this idea. I think it would be cool to see the inner workings of these characters. Would you have a moderator in the videos as well or would it be more like a confessional style video? I think that the characters should be shown individually because we have all read about how they interact with each other, we have yet to see them truly alone.
