Deadly Teddy Bear

“That is enough,” he said. “It is good sport, but on such a day as this I would rather not kill anything needlessly, and there is one for my mother and two for the Merlin.” This part stuck out to me when reading because it really shows what Lancelot’s character is like. It shows that a very powerful knight can be so kind hearted to the birds and only want to kill what he absolutely needs. He doesn’t even catch one for himself he takes care of his mother and Merlin. In these stories they portray Merlin as a very powerful knight that loves to fight and prove his worth undercover. Therefore, seeing someone like Lancelot care for a bird speaks about who he really is. I think seeing the characters be portrayed in so many different ways through out the text helps you get a well-rounded perspective of who they really are outside of fighting.

  1. yeah - it's a very interesting dynamic, isn't it? One of the nice things about some of these modern stories is we get a sense of what the knights might have been like when they are not busy fighting or wooing the ladies. It's also a nice point, as you say, to see Lancelot honoring Merlin with food for his supper (in this story, Merlin is quite old though still powerful).

  2. I also enjoyed seeing the other side of Lancelot that we have not really seen in other stories. I thought it was interesting that the author gave such a focus on Lancelot's delicate side.

  3. You bring up a great point here. I also find it very interesting that a man with such power can soften up once in a while. The story becomes much more relatable because I find it hard to believe someone could be emotionless. This part of the reading stuck out to me as well for this same reason.

  4. Yeah at first I had to double check and make sure that they were talking about Lancelot. We have read so many stories about Lancelot that I thought there was nothing more to learn about him, but nope I guess he has a delicate side.

  5. I agree with what you say here. I think that it is a wonderful characterization by showing that he cares for animals. I don't see him ever eating anything that was once living, for instance.

  6. I'm with you and Megan on this one, Lancelot is so different in this story than the others it's hard to think it's still the same guy!
