So This Is How A YA Novel Reads

Avalon High was a cute but strange read for me. I never read any "young adult" novels when I was in middle school or high school, so I had no clue what this was going to be like.
Every chapter of the book has a piece of the original "Lady of Shallot" at the beginning. Do you think that the excerpts were actually helpful in piecing together what was going on in the story, or was it just kind of there?

  1. I think that overall the excerpts from the "Lady of Shallot" adding more to the story. There were some times that the excerpts did just feel kind of there but I did enjoy the addition of them. It made the story have more of a connection to the original story.

  2. the image that you have included in your post is from the rather unfortunate manga-ish version ... I have a copy of it in my office. It's a very different reading experience as well.

I do think that some of the chapter epigraphs are spot-in and some of them are like, gosh, I guess we just have to find something to put there for consistency! ;-)

  3. I think that the excerpts were a cool piece that Cabot added to the beginning of every chapter. I think that sometimes they were able to show the difference between Ellie and Elaine. Ellie was constantly being compared to Elaine throughout the book, that by reading the excerpts before every chapter, we got to see how in some ways they were different.

  4. I didn't help for me personally. However, that is not to say that they were written badly. I just felt as though it was needlessly there.

    1. I agree, I thought the excerpts were cool too. I liked that it was familiar but it didn't really cause me to make a connection with Ellie and lady of shallot. I think it was just kind of there as well.

  5. I think that the excerpts might not have elevated the experience for most readers, but considering we read many original texts including The Lady of Shallot, it was a nice addition for me. We were able to look back and remember what we had previously read, and this adds more context to the current reading.
