Schoolgirls in King Arthur stories.

"He blinked repeatedly as flashbulbs went off, looked around the crowd facing him, and then saw Gwen standing in the back. He smiled to her, and she smiled back, almost schoolgirlishly..." (David, 172).

I like this scene a lot because it demonstrates the approach of the author really well. Its what we are used to seeing, just in a different context. Some might cringe a this, but I see this as a real understanding of the material, at least when it comes to lovey dovey side of things.

  1. I appreciate that you called attention to this particular word in the way that you did. Good job of close reading! It's an adverb that could come across as really irritating BUT perhaps you are right - the surface level type of attraction that is suggested by a "schoolgirl crush" may have a lot in common with courtly love (though usually with less swordfighting!)

    1. The "schoolgirl" adjective made sense, although to me it sounded a bit cheesy. I do also think that this excerpt was chosen purpose since the next thing we're reading is Avalon High where Arthur is in high school.

  2. I liked the usage of schoolgirl in this context too because to me it felt like the beginning development of their relationship. The term schoolgirl also made me think that it was almost a forbidden type of relationship that they were having; although, we know that Gwen and Arthur are supposed to get married.

  3. I was a bit confused by this part because at the beginning I thought Arthur was rather rude to Gwen! The part where she says "can you at least try to like me?" and Arthur responds something like "yeah, maybe" and walks away. What a douchey kind of move. Then this happens?? How do you feel about her Arthur?!?!

  4. I agree with Eleana here, I was quite confused about Arthur's intentions. It wasn't very clear in the reading, and that it the part that makes me frustrated.

  5. I also agree with Eleana I did not understand this section because I was confused what Arthur really wanted. I had to read it a couple times in order to try and understand it.

  6. I kind of agree that it feels cringey to me. I also agree with Eleana, I was slightly confused with his intentions, and this detail definitely made me more confused

  7. I think I kind of understand the schoolgirl crush aspect for Gwen since she kind of acts innocent and is also invested in Arthur. I think Arthur was teasing her but obviously not in the best way. I think he could have done a better job with that but he must have found that entertaining somehow.
