Just.... Why?

Honestly I have so many questions about this reading but the two that stick out the most to me are: Why was Arthur okay with, and honestly kind of supportive, of Lancelot having an affair with Guinevere? And Secondly, If he knew Mordred was going to try to kill him and was plotting against him, why did he listen to him so much? Wouldn't it have just been easier if he had banished him or something?

  1. I agree that it is quite bizarre that Arthur is okay with the affair but, when it comes to listening to Mordred even though he knew Mordred's intent, I would say it relates to the saying "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer". I guess he thinks it's better to know what Mordred is doing so he can try and prevent something from happening.

    1. I agree with your reasoning here, I wonder though how much of the issue with Mordred is caused by the fact Arthur heard the prophecy that Mordred was going to kill him, so he ordered all the babies that were his age to be drowned. I feel like honestly if he had maybe taken him in and raised him, instead of trying to kill him, maybe Mordred wouldn't have become an enemy.

    2. I think Arthur genuinely cares about both of them and maybe does not want them to get hurt. I think maybe if he reacted negatively he would become vulnerable and lose sight of his duties.

  2. If you love someone (and I think we can definitely say that Arthur loves both his queen and Lancelot, who's basically his best friend), you want them to be happy. If Arthur sees that L&G make each other happy, I can see where he is coming from. And even if he doesn't agree with Mordred, he does take Mordred's point -- which is that justic should apply equally to everyone. So he can't argue with Mordred since Mordred is making the same argument that Arthur has been trying to make his whole adult life about Right vs Might.

    1. As I mentioned to Nick thought, I wonder if he inadvertently caused all of the issues with Mordred by trying to kill him as a baby. I feel like it ended up being more of a self fulfilling prophecy then Arthur ever really thought about.

  3. I honestly think that Arthur is acting okay about Lancelot and Guinevere's affair because he knows that is he was to interfere and publicize it, things could go wrong very quick. If others found out then he would have to end his own wife's life. The destruction of the marriage that rules Camelot could create of unwanted issues that Arthur was not willing to have. It's almost like he settled for the situation. In my opinion, Arthur should have said something.

    1. I think your right, but then Mordred is Arthurs illegitimate child, so it does show that Arthur wasn't exactly perfect in his marriage either. I honestly didn't even think of it from the perceptive of 'what would happen if...' but now that you point it out, I think your right.

    2. I agree as well and if it got out to the public he could have lost some of the people's dependency or trust because he is expected to be perfect and great so why would his own queen do this to him if she did not think the same. Maybe it would cause suspicion.
