Arthur is Still Arthur

Overall, I thought that Avalon High was a decent book. At first I was a little thrown by how young adult it was, but I was able to move past it. I did enjoy the twist at the end with Ellie ending up not being Elaine / Lily Maid of Astolat, or The Lady of Shalott. Though I kind of saw the twist coming, though I did not know who Ellie would be, because I remembered the Disney movie of the same name that came out years ago about the main girl not being who you would expect (anyone else watch that?). Honestly Will really did embody the characteristics and personality I would suspect that Arthur would have. Will was very popular with everyone in school. In the beginning when Ted was getting bullied Will stood up for him and “Because there’d been a steely note in Will’s voice that made it clear no one – not even a two-hundred-pound halfback – had better try to mess with him. Or dare to disobey one of his commands” (Cabot 55). Having Will be the class president and football star helped him feel more Arthur-like. Even though Will was super popular he never let it get to his head, like how King Arthur was still humble.

  1. That Disney Channel movie is SO BAD. But I do like the way they made Merlin the nerdy friend instead of the teacher!

Is a plot twist SO EXPECTED now that it actually has the opposite effect? Like we are all so busy looking for the twist that when it comes we're like, "meh"?

    1. YES. The plot twist happens so often that it's a shock that there isn't a plot twist. That is unless, in some situations, when the media is being designed for a younger audience.

    2. I agree that the movie was horrible! I was so disappointed at how much detail was changed. Though, that's not a surprise these days at how often books get butchered when turned into movies. In this case, it also completely took away the themes of loyalty, friendship, and changing your destiny. Instead the filmmakers tried to make it "girl power" and it was not fun. The "twist" wasn't a twist, just a let down.

    3. The movie really is so bad! I just rewatched it because of the book and it was rough. I think that nowadays we are always expecting some sort of twist so when it happens it no longer has the same effect. It is like "oh yeah I saw that coming."

  2. I agree, I can see how Will is so much like Arthur. I think his representation was accurate especially in a modern setting. and the ending was great. I really like Ellie's character and loved seeing her character growth overall and the ending was a surprise.

  3. I will be honest, I wasn't quite expecting the twist at the end where Ellie was actually one of Arthur's protectors instead of the Lady of Shallot. The excerpts from the poem made it seem like she was doomed to fall in love with Lancelot and then have her heart broken by the end of it, but it was nice to see that thing did end on a positive note for her.
