Arthur in Deep Thought

"'I have been thinking,' said Arthur, 'about Might and Right. I don't think things ought to be done because you are able to do them. I think they should be done because you ought to do them. After all, a penny is a penny in any case, however much Might is exerted on either side, to prove that it is or is not. Is that plain?'" (White 246).

This part of the story stood out to me because Arthur brings up some interesting thoughts in a meeting. While Arthur begins to get deep into thought, he also is calling out Merlyn, which made me laugh.

  1. I agree with how it stood out. I like the contrast that occurs from Arthur early on in the story to when he starts to understand what it means to fight. How Merlyn is guiding him to find the truth while also making Arthur have to think for himself.

  2. Having Merlin tell Arthur to think for himself then Arthur says that he is thinking for himself. Shows me that Merlin's guidance and input on Arthur means something to Arthur and how he wants to rule.

    1. I agree, I like how Arthur shows Merlin what he wants to see and calls him out. I also feel like Arthur wants Merlin to be proud of him as well.

  3. Yeah, I enjoy this line a lot as well. I think that it shows some solid characterizations of Arthur as a wide eyed optimist. Additionally, I appreciate that this shows a level of optimism in Arthur that I do not know if he has later down the road as his responsibilities appear to stack up.

  4. This is one of those moments that reminds me of the first time that I read this in 8th grade English. I remember thinking at the time that this just felt like common sense - like, duh, just because you're able to do something doesn't mean that you should! But I no that I did not really grasp how important it is for our leaders to understand this difference then. It's always nice to come back to something later and see it with more maturity and awareness ... at least I certainly hope I'm more mature than I was when I was 13! ;-)

  5. Yeah this conversation is great for me. I learned so much about Arthur's new thoughts on might vs. right, along with the specific points Merlyn is trying to teach. Just bc you can kill someone, with strong reason to, just knowing you have the power to is enough.
