I think he's trying to prove that he actually lives up to his reputation. It would be pretty easy for him to just sit back and rest on his laurels - he's already been acknowledged as the greatest knight in the world, so he could just be like "yeah, I'm goin' to Disneyland!"
The fact that he doesn't - that he wants to continue to excel and earn his reputation, is one of his more redeeming character traits, imho. I don't think everyone has to agree with my assessment, but it's something I do like about the way his character is presented.
I was thinking this exact same thing while I was reading. I know Lancelot is highly praised and respected by all of the other knights, so why would he need to hide himself, or even fight in the tournament at all. After reading Dr. MB's comments, it does make sense that he is still trying to prove himself because it might not look good for the best knight to sit back and not do anything.
I as well wondered why it was so necessary for his identity to be kept under wraps. If you read my post, I was even questioning why he even fought in the first place. I was thinking that there was maybe a hidden reason for all of this.

Yeah i agree with MB, he really wants his actions to speak for himself rather than his name. Still though, it does seem unnecessary and dramatic at times.
I feel like Lancelot keeps his identity hidden as a part of his aura. It adds to the mysterious aspect of few people actually knowing his identity.
