So y'all just gonna let Lancelot kill a woman?
Bruh. Okay, so are we just going to completely ignore the fact that Lancelot basically killed a woman? I thought he was better than that. Maybe I feel a bit personally victimized because Lancelot was my favorite, and he killed a woman named Elaine which hits just a little too close to home. But come. on. First of all, Lancelot is against King Arthur? I was starting to think that this was supposed to be before all of the other stories we have read about Lancelot, as at the end the author says "It was thought that at the next Pentecost he would be made a knight of the Round Table" (pg. 472). But he is still romantically involved with Queen Guinevere, whom we thought he met while being part of Arthur's court? More importantly, why did Lancelot not even attempt to try to love Elaine? Especially if she was giving him the most love and care a man could have ever received (pg. 467). And he still wasn't about it? THEN forgave Guinevere for being rude? How could Lancelot be so stupid and yet so chivalrous at the same time? I just want to know why he was like this. I need answers.

Eleana, check out my comment on Megan C's post where I share a few thoughts on this. How much are any of us responsible for how someone else feels about us?
ReplyDeleteDo you think her death is as much his fault as if he like straight-up stabbed her or cut her head off or something?
Hi character is indeed tricky. We gotta remember this is meant to be over the top (See my comment on Meg Wright's post) - it's escapist reading. Because otherwise, yeah, WTF all the way! ;-)
Now that I've seen everyone else's posts and thought about it a bit more, I feel like now it's really not his fault. But I still want it to be his fault.
DeleteI agree with Dr. MB. I feel like we cannot hold Lancelot really accountable for Elaine's death. Yes he lead her on a bit but then he made his feelings clear with her. I feel like she was being unreasonable and trying to force Lancelot to love her. It still is really messed up though that after everything she died.
ReplyDeleteI probably should have thought about that after reading. I think I'm just really quick to make it the mans fault, haha
DeleteI think Lancelot is one of those characters that is described in such a cool way that you wanna like him, and then he does these stupid things and you wanna hate him but you can't quite choose. I also really liked Lancelot when he was first introduced but now I find him selfish and after a woman that wants nothing to do with him. I wonder why authors started to change their view on Lancelot and write stories about him that end up making him look like a bad guy.
ReplyDeleteRight, that's an interesting point. I wonder did Lancelot do something shady in real life to make people upset with him?
