Anachronism and Artorius

The 2004 film King Arthur plays with one of the ideas for a "Historical" King Arthur; a Roman commander in the last days of Roman Britain, with the knights as Sarmatian auxiliary cavalry. Visually, the designs blend period-appropriate elements with things that are either anachronistic or pure fantasy. Arthur's armor appears to be plate stylized to look like Roman loricated armor, the various knights have weapons ranging from Lancelot's twin gladius with fantasy embellishments to Tristan's almost comically out of place Chinese dao (of a style that wouldn't exist for over 1000 years).

What definitly seems consistant with the period is the decadence and lack of interest expressed by the Roman authorities for the people left in danger by their withdrawal, and for their promises made to people like Arthur's knights.
